CM Hyper D92 CPU cooler mod ideas?

I was thinking of modding the D92, maybe into a 120mm cooler, and removing that top piece:

And then I want to paint it black, install my own 120mm fans, is this even possible? whats a realistic mod?

im wandering two things:

how will the 120mm fans mount

how will I cut the heatsink

It wouldn't really be worth it to do a mod like that as the heatsink itself is smaller than a 120mm fan there wouldn't be any gain or help in terms of cooling.

show me the numbers please!

Well the unit is only about 92mm tall since the fan reaches the full height of the unit, if you were to cut fins to accommodate the 120mm unit it would extend past the fin array and have less surface area than originally.

how would it have less?

cut the extruding little fin parts, mount the 120mm in the middle somehow

That would still be reducing the effective surface area of the cooler still, as the 92 mm fan on either side currently draws air over or push it over that fin section for cooling. It may be better to get a 120mm cooler in terms of pure performance, the hyper 212 is a good value for something like that.

would it be worth sacrificing those little parts for bigger fans?

Personally I don't see much gain from modding it with a larger fan, if the fans were noisy it may be just better to get some good 92mm pressure fans.
