I do rendering in after effects frequently and soon im going to be doing gcse graphic design when i will need to render and pre render frames and stuff in photoshop and after effects. right now i use 8gb of corsair vengance at 1600mhz i was wondering if i should get 2x4gb sticks of the same kind of ram or if i should buy a new set of 16gb ram with a higher speed like 1866 or 2333mhz and would higher speeds make a difference to rendering times and scrubbing through pre rendered frames

First do you have a seperate gpu? second get the app call msi afterburner and scoll all the way down on the monitor screen to see how much ram you are using

Also check your MOBO and how much ram it can support in each slot, I would say IF you do need to upgrade AND your MOBO supports 16GB sticks go for that but, this will cost more and also it will mean the other sticks can still be used but check they are in the correct slots on your MOBO using the manual or a quick google search!

That way you set your self up when upgrading in the future as if you commit to say 2x4GB you fill all your slot and the next upgrade you are chucking ram to the side as you can't fit it in,

and FYI you can use different ram stick capacities on the same MOBO so don't worry about that side of things :)

Sorry totally overlooked the speed part of the question lol! My bad!

Short answer would be nope!

Slightly longer answer, in all honesty no one has tested it and come to a point where the RAM speed has made any sort of major impact!

I would say if your MOBO can handle up to say 2800Mhz and you are looking at a 16Gb stick where 1866 is £60 and the 2333 is £65 and you can afford it then chip in the small increase, but the change you see will be so small that I would buy on which heat sink I prefer or colour suits my build better lol!

I wouldn't go out of my way to purchase faster ram as a performance boost as from all I have seen it really doesn't make a single bit of difference, in any sort of rendering or gaming situation.

If you want to greatly increase your workflow then you would be better off getting 2 high speed SSDs and chucking them into a raid 0 set up to improve your over all workflow before I would be looking at the Ram speed to show any sort of difference, if you are running a HDD at this moment you will see a massive performance boost but it will cost you slightly more than what you are looking at for one stick of ddr3 :)
