I'm building a PC for a friend and was given 750 PURELY FOR PARTS. The machine would mostly be used for rendering, Autodesk applications like cad or revit, and Photoshop. i already have a tentative list together but id like to get some more opinions.

I was planning on an intel i5 6500 skylake processor with 8gb of RAM and a GTX 960 gpu with at least 4gb of VRAM. I leave the case up to the customer as its more of a aesthetic thing (But i usually help so there isn't compatibility issues or they pick something with good build quality). lastly i was going to go for a 650w power supply to leave room for upgrade-ability, let me know what you think please.

i5-6500 is fast, but for 750 you can get a bit more,

Also 750 what? USD?

750 GBP can get you a 5820K, motherboard, 16gb ram, and a 960, which will be much better for rendering - and is overclockable if they wish to.

750 USD on the other hand wont get you anywhere near as much.

Are you wanting parts like SSD HDD cooler etc?

I went for a Xeon because HT will certainly help with video editing.

i was also considering and AMD 8350 for the 8 core, I do the same stuff, use a 9590, and its BOSS

The E3-1231 v3 would be a better choice. Should perform slightly better, runs much cooler, runs on cheaper motherboards and uses a lot less energy.

Certainly, perhaps even Skylake Xeons, they wont run on a consumer chipset unlike previous gens, but there are still cheap boards with those chipsets, i believe C232 and C236 chipsets, ASRock and ASUS have boards for them, more probably do aswell. MSI calls it X150 for whatever reason.

USD

Then you're better off sticking on normal DT lines, you could still go for HEDT with 2011-3 socket, but you'd be losing out on gpu power.
