The CPU "EPS" 4/8 pin connector and the PCIe 6/8 pin connectors are NOT compatible, and forcing one in to the wrong socket will cause the connector or board to burn out! Is the damage done or is it still early enough to fix?

The PCIe and EPS connectors can be easy to confuse, but the CPU connector will ALWAYS have all 8 pins on one block or 4 pins and 4 pins on two separate blocks that can be snapped or slid together. The PCIe connector will always have all 8 pins or 6 pins and 2 pins on two separate blocks that can be snapped or slid together. If you're not sure, consult your power supply manual for the labeling on the blocks.

Hope this helps!

The computer has not been turned on if we couldent fit it we just put it down and said we can do it another time.

Phew!!! Double check with the power supply manual. There are labels or dots on the connectors (most of the time at least), and the manual will tell you what goes where. Sometimes, it's confusing because the two wire bundles will only have black and yellow wires. Wiggle the 6+2 or 4+4 and see if there's any sliding action. If there is, then you'll be able to tell what goes where.

So did i get the wrong power supply or something?

Nope, the power supply itself is fine. You'll just have to sleuth a bit to figure out which connectors go where.

You may want to try flipping the connector the other way. They will only go in one way.

Right! Check the retaining clips on the side of the connector with the side of the socket.
