GTX 960 Black Screen

My brother built a budget rig with new parts, but used his old 500w (cheapo) PSU which failed and took the motherboard with it. The mobo has since been replaced along with a new Corsair HX650 and the rig boots fine. However, after a random interval the screen goes black and a hard reset is required to get it back. The interval can be anywhere from 15mins to an hour. Does this sound like the previous PSU failure damaged the GPU as well?

CPU: AMD A10 7700K APU
MB: Asus A68HM-Plus
GPU: 2GB GTX 960
RAM: Corsair 4GB Vengeance
PSU: Corsair HX650

take the gpu out and try if the apu makes a difference
