Gaming setup

elemental.

Hello everybody. For the past two to three months I read literally hundreds of posts related for 60+ fps 1440p gaming setup, that's future-proof for the next three to five years. I first went with the 4690k, then to 6600k, 4790k, 5820k, but considering it needs DDR4 memory and motherboard that has LGA 2011-v3 socket, I got back to 4790k, Same thing with GPUs, firstly I saw GTX 970 Turbo, then went for the R9 380, then the R9 390, and finally MSI's GTX 980Ti Gaming 6G. This is final setup, tell me what you think I should change.

CPU Intel Core i7-4790k @ 4.0GHz Stock

CPU Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard MSI Z97 Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150

Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16 GB DDR3 CL11

Storage Western Digital Red WD10EFRX 1TB

Storage Kingston HyperX Savage 240GB

Video Card MSI GeForce® GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G

Case Cooler Master Mastercase Pro 5

Power Supply Thermaltake Smart Series 730W
Total price is near $2000, $1978 to be precise. You have to consider that I'm from Bosnia And Herzegovina, so the prices can look a bit high, for a example, this GPU is $800.

If you want it to last a few years, why are you using 1150/DDR3, makes more sense to use 1151/DDR4 to me?

Future proofing isn't real, aside from your case, and partially on your display if you get a high end display.

So what's your current display set up? What are you using your PC for? and no idea where one would look for parts in Bosnia.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Since you're using it for what would appear to be only gaming, I'd drop to an i5, 6600k instead.

@LLOYD-AF Becouse giving $250 for the RAM, MOBO and CPU at the time is not needed. DDR4 won't give me the difference in gaming as well as the 5820k will give me almost the same performance as 4790k due to it's low stock speed, as I read so.

EDIT: most of the posts I read about 4790k said that it is already a overkill CPU for gaming.

@Streetguru I'm going to buy the Asus VG248QE for the display, which is 1080p monitor as I just saw. I also forgot to mention that I think about streaming and recording gameplay with it, AND I'm going to watercool it after some time, when I have enough money for it. Is Fractal S better than this case for it ?

@DioOmicida Can it handle recording with 60+ fps at maxed out settings for most of the games ?

@don_svetlio Which one would you recommend ?

Probably lower a bit with case(personal preference), gpu(overkill, but that is point right), and psu(I dont know about this).

you might as well get a 6700k, thats not a lga2011-3 socket, and those wont even cost more.

If the i7 6700 for skylake is available it turbos to 4ghz. really not too nessisary to pay extra for overclocking with it.

the 5820K has 6 cores, so it will crush the more consumer i7s in productivity workloads

and a 980ti is going to be kind of wasted on that display even if it's 144hz, also you can probably get a free-sync display for around the same price if they're available.

Far as cases go, the Define S is built more for silence than anything else. So you'd want the non windowed version for that, otherwise probably get an R5 I guess or Master Case 5 if you're crazy and want a pseudo case labs case.

I guess here's just a parts list, it includes a much better display, 1440p 144hz and IPS, with free-sync (30-144hz)

@Streetguru 6700k wouldn't be a bad thing actually, I might go for it. I don't really know why I didn't checked it out earlier. Is MSI Z170A Gaming M3 good motherboard for it ? About graphics card, GTX 980ti would give me 15-35 fps better performance at 1080p, which I like, and I think I'll stick with it. As far as the case goes, I think I'll go with Fractal Design Define S. I really don't care about noise, as my current PC is loud as jet lol. And also it has enough space for good custom watercooling loop. For the monitor, that's $250 more expensive monitor, which is bigger, and I really dont like big monitors, said no man ever except me. I'll probably take that PSU.

your display is going to be holding back your GPU, there wouldn't be much reason to get a 980ti for a 1080p 144hz display, especially with new GPUs only a few months away, a 390 may not be able to fully saturate a 1440p 144hz display now for most games, but if you're patient in a few months you're going to end up with a much better set up than you would have had before with a 1080p 144hz TN display, especially given the lack of adaptive sync in your current display choice.

27" really isn't too much bigger than a 24" display, you're going to get used to it quickly.

I know it's overkill, but I said it needs to be future-proof, as GTX 980Ti is. I know that 390 is cheaper card that's gonna fit my 1080p 60fps demand, but I think it will fail that in 2017./2018. games, I think.
