Hey,

Long story short, my cousin's birthday is coming  and he's gaming a average hp laptop (*sigh*) [he plays mainly league of legos]. I'm planing to change my GPU soonish with polaris release.
So I'll give him my old video card (reference gtx 780) with a gpu dock for his laptop.

I went thought gpus dock and some of them are stupidly expensive, I found this one to be decently priced : http://www.ebay.com/itm/V8-0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-Mini-PCI-E-Vers/291688406245?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D35624%26meid%3De2c205051b5d4a1eb0393c51723dbe6b%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D181943864835

Is it good or total junk ? (also need advice for the dock, if you guys know a better one in a decent price range, no need to have a 300€ dock for a 200€ gpu)

Part II of the question : what kind of power supply do I need for this setup, is a  300w enough ? (it will power up only the 780, no overclocking).

Maybe the best option is to get a gtx 750 TI for the dock and keep the 780 for another rig later on.

[to answer the obvious question : my 780 makes noise, I don't like noise, I want a quieter GPU, idc about rawhorsepower since I play mainly in low details 1080p and I bought this card in the first place cause i'm an idiot]

Regards

I'll ask him the precise reference of his laptop, I think it is an Hp envy dv"X", and I would probably have to unplug the wifi card to plug the dock.
The on board GPU is a GT 850/860m for what I can remember. so any external gpu would be an improvement imo.

  • 2 weeks later...

I created an account just so I can speak on this subject. I have one of these and I must say, it is awesome but the bandwidth will drop FPS to half for a few seconds in some scenarios. This drop is not as bad as it seems. It's a hell of an upgrade compared to no graphics. On a Core 2 Duo T9400 with a GTX 660, I was getting 50ish FPS in Batman Arkham City with drops to 25ish FPS when moving through the open world really quickly but it recovers to 40 then back to 50 when fighting bad guys... and this is on ULTRA settings with low Physx.

A GTX 780 is overkill, I have used a GTX 780 TI and a GTX 660 and the latter is all you need. It's $90 for a used GTX 660 on eBay as I type this and it gets better frames than a GTX 750 TI. Also most GTX 750 TI cards don't have a 6-pin power connector and the EXP GDC Beast won't be able to power it via just the bus. Also, I just so happen to have a Dell 220watt power adapter lying around so I didn't have to rig a power supply for the GTX 660 but I did need to use an power supply for the GTX 780 TI cause that bad boy needed 250 watts. You can get a Dell power supply for less than $20 on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-SX280-GX620-745-755-USFF-AC-Power-Supply-Adapter-RXVT7-DA-3-/152043332890?hash=item23667d251a:g:Fc4AAOSwZ8ZW2IqB

I hope this helps.

Also, when running 3dMark Fire Strike, there's a 25% hit in performance compared to a desktop. I've done this from a laptop running an i7-4700MQ and a desktop running an i7-3770.

I have 2 boys, 12 and 14 so we have tons of fun and parts variations.
