TravisB

Hello,

If I was to buy a m.2 ssd and I connect it to an pcie adapter, Would it be as fast as a pcie ssd?

If your M.2 is truly PCIe based, meaning it does not use a SATA controller and it has dedicated PCIe lanes then it will be very close. Otherwise PCIe will be faster

The notches on each SSD would look different. Other than that, both would look more or less the same.

So with the pcie based m.2 that would fit into a pcie slot? and the sata base into a m.2 slot on a motherboard?

Right, it would depend on what type of notched connector is on your motherboard. If it has only one on the right, it can run a PCIe M.2 SSD or a SATA one, though SATA compatibility still depends on your motherboard. If it has 2 notches on either end, if can only accept SATA M.2 SSDs. What motherboard are you using?
