$500 budget PC

LordBacon

So here is the current situation i am in. I would like to build a budget PC to get me through the next 3 or 4 years. I have an issue when building my own that i tend to go overboard and over budget, this is due to the fact that i am fairly well versed in the majority of computer parts and i am a "the best of the best" kind of person despite not being loaded with cash. so i wanted to reach out to the community and put a kind of challenge out there to people for suggestions on systems (not pre-built please) either parts of them or just full system builds. the uses for this machine will be everything from running virtual machines for school to gaming and streaming. so if you have any suggestions or just straight up PC builds you have used in the past please feel free to link them. the current budget of $500 is not rock solid but its preferred.

you can just add an CPU cooler at some point. then a bigger SSD, better GPU or CPU and RAM upgrade. Should be good enough for most modern games.

Here's the best I can come up with. I would save up a little more and get something like this or even a bit better if you want it to last you 3-4 years. Something for $500 right now simply won't very well without a lot of upgrades: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/FDY8WZ

i have been cautioned in the past against AMD CPU's because of their scheduling. i personally have never owned one so i dont know what its like first hand. what are your thoughts?

what i've been told is that don't buy AMD cpus right now unless its an 860k and wait for the Zen chips to release and hope they are good.

Never owned one either, and the internet is pretty mixed on the subject. I think if you're going to be doing less gaming and more CPU intensive stuff (especially VM's) I would lean toward Intel, but if you're on a budget AMD can be good just because they're so dang cheap.

havent heard that. but i guess it lines up. also not a fan of their CPU's that claim 8 cores when 4 of them are virtual cores.

Yeah, it seems like now is not a great time to start a build with Zen as well as the new Nvidia stuff coming out.

MSi actually overclocked it to 6.8 GHz but then again they are MSi.
