Fury X or GTX 980 Ti good enough for 1080p 144hz or 1440p 144hz.

SoloDolo

So currently I am doing a custom build for a work friend of mine. He wants to be able to max more recent games but also wants really solid FPS above 60fps. On his budget I am not quite sure how possible it is as the monitor has to be included in the price. So would the Fury X or the 980 Ti have enough power to push modern FPS and rpgs at max settings above 60fps in 1440p? Right now I am using a 3440x1440 monitor and certainly cant max every game at 60fps but I know I have a more demanding monitor. Now the other choice is to drop down to a 1080p monitor which Id imagine be able to give the maxed out settings and high FPS with those cards.

Let me know what you all think and what we can do with the following build and the best monitor choice.

They're both neck and neck cards, but the 980 ti does have more VRAM and (I believe) more compatibility and advantages in applications. Personally, I would say if you have a G-Sync monitor, get the Nvidia side, a freesync monitor, go for AMD.

Could the 980 Ti and Fury X be able to game at 1440p with above 60fps with most settings maxed?

You'll get close, but not 60 maxed out. I would say the 980ti is the better card for most games, as both will max out everything at 60 except GTA5, witcher 3, Fallout 4 etc, and the 980ti does better in those titles.

I have a very similar build with a 1440p monitor, and I can't "max" everything and get 60FPS, some settings like anti aliasing have to be tuned but other settings like textures, and detail I'm able to completely max

basically, you can't "max" every game out, you'll have to turn down 1 or 2 settings on more demanding titles. But you will have one of the best gaming experiences possible

You might have to turn down some settings, but it's doable.

Witcher 3: I get 60+fps on if I turn down foliage visibility range to high vs ultra, and hairworks off (I'm using the mod to enable Geralt's beard and monsters only)
The Division: I have to turn down most settings to High, but I'm still able to enable HBAO and get 60+fps. Nvidia's HFTS shadow quality is demanding and drops my fps to the 40s.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: I get over 60fps with max settings without anti-aliasing (IMO 1440p doesn't need anti-aliasing). If you enable SSAA, it effectively renders the game at 2x or 4x your resolution, but it's hard to tell the difference.

Wish we knew when Pascal's high-end cards were going to release, because I would say wait, but we could be waiting until later this year or next year for that.

I've been very happy with the 980ti, however I'm kind of bummed it can't completely max out The Division at 1440p.

Final note: G-Sync is a real treat, but if the FPS dips under 55, you get some "jittery" movement.

Monitor: ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q
GPU: MSI 980Ti Twin Frozr C/M:1470/7500
CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K @ 4.5Ghz
Case: Corsair 750D
Keyboard: Corsair K65 Cherry Red
Mouse: Logitech G70 Spectrum
Headset: Corsair Void

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666mhz
