Memory not usable

Hey guys,

A few days ago I upgraded from 8 to 16GB of Kingston Hyper X Fury 1866MHz DDR3 (in total, two sets of Dual-Channel kits, so 4x4GB). All 16GB are detected by the BIOS and CPU-Z, and Memtest completed 4 consecutive passes without any errors being detected.

However windows 7 (64bit) detects the 16GB but says both in the system specs and in task manager that only 8GB are usable. Going with any combination of 2 sticks out of the 4, works perfectly fine.

Does anyone know what could cause this and how it can be fixed?

You could check if there is a memory limmit set to 8GB at boot up in Msconfig.

1 Open msconfig. (start run type msconfig and hit enter)

2 Go to the boot tab > Advanced options.

3 Uncheck max memory check box.

4 reboot system.

On a side note: Which version of Windows 7 do you have?

Windows 7 Home Basic caps out at 8GB.

Windows 7 Home Premium caps at 16GB.

Windows 7 Professional caps at 192GB.

I would say if your BIOS and CPU-Z both see the RAM, then you're probably running Home Basic.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. I have Win7 Home Basic 64bit

The max memory box was already unchecked, when i checked it, it´s default setting was 16GB but that didn´t make a difference after restarting.

I see, I do have Home Basic.

Thanks, I guess this is solved after I reinstall windows.

Yeah if you have Home Basic then you are limmited to 8GB indeed.

If you have the ability to install Home premium X64 or better then that might solve your issue most likely.

I have, and I will. I don´t know why I installed Home Basic in the first place :S

Thanks again!
