I have just done a clean reformat / Windows 7 64 bit install. I am unable to run windows update; it just displays "Checking for updates..." for hours on end.

I have looked for the solutions online; which there were a few but none worked:

I have tried running the 'fix windows update problems' in the start->troubleshoot etc menu

I have tried the 'aggressive windows update' hotfix

I have tried rebooting and checking the windows clock/date/time.

I have tried using the windows 10 media creation tool to spoof an update

No luck. I am downloading SP1 but that will take a few hours, and may or may not work. Anything else I can try in the mean time? This is a totally new windows format; the first thing I did try was to update windows.

Well, lets start on installing the drivers first shall we? atleast you have working computer. Anyways, i know build in windows update is a bitch and it is a bitch. depends on your internet connection.just leave your computer on over night. it will update by itself(make sure auto update is on)

I have installed a couple of drivers, for some reason my GPU driver is not working though (no installable components). I will end up leaving it on over night if I can't figure it out, but i'd like to use it asap. It also ime needs to update many times, and when I sleep it will only check for updates once (scheduled time), reboot, and then stick on the login screen. Without a PW, it would just log in but not check again for updates I find, unless there is another way.

You're upgrading to 10? Use the USB tool and only the key from the 7. I mean, the tool that boots from USB, not the in-OS tool.

no I do not want windows 10, Windows seems to really, really want me to have it though.

wow then that is an issue. Maybe your mobo is not detecting the gpu. is the gpu "alive"?

my motherboard did have serious issues when I started using it with Windows 7; I installed windows 10 which it was fine on, but I am back to square one now. I am >90% sure the GPU is fine, just has some problems likely related to the updates/drivers.

I have stumbled upon the solution from another user with a similar issue.

Here is the fix for anyone stumbling upon this one!

If you cannot get past searching for updates on a new format of windows 7 64 bit ,

you must apply this update:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4fe566bd-31b1-4413-8c4c-412b52533669

(32 bit here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=fcd6bf5d-f004-4ca3-aa7e-1de462b91dd0)

followed by this hotfix, after you install the prior update and reboot:
