So I've been planning to move away from my laptop, and I've put together a parts list here:http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RJYJvK

Its for general use and light to heavy gaming mostly

Any pointers or part alternatives with a better price to performance ratio is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

This seems like a good choice, allthough a Core i5 6600K would be good enough for "light to heavy gaming". If you're not going to overclock it, get a non-K branded CPU, that'll save you some more $$. In that case you may also want to get a cheaper CPU cooler.

Maybe you could also look for a motherboard with integrated WiFi, it might save you some money.

Because I live in the Netherlands, I'm not very familiar with Newegg, Ebay, Amazon, etc. so I can't easily find good links for you. I'm sorry.

Overclocking isn't worth it, and this includes an SSD and a faster GPU

also the NEX PSUs are fairly sub par which is why they're so cheap

Do you really even need a DVD drive?

I'm trying to "future-proof" this build as much as possible.

As for the GPU I'm a looking at the GTX 970 as an alternative to my aforementioned GTX 960 (both in the 4GB variant)

Future proofing isn't real aside from your Case, and the 390 is faster than the 970, not to mention with seemingly better DX12/Vulkan support, and saving money should you get an adaptive sync display.

As for the CPU would I get better price/performance from a 4790K?

And the R9 390 is looking good.....any recommended manufacturers?

You'd want the Xeon 1231v3 if you were going Haswell, otherwise you're going to want the 6700(non K) because overclocking isn't worth it when the chip already turbos to 4ghz, at best you're going to get 4.5ghz on an OC for an extra $100-150 dollars for maybe 10% more performance? It's simply not worth it to pay extra for overclocking anymore.

I agree. Although if you enjoy it, the fun of overclocking could be worth $100-150

Or, like screw overclocking and throw in a 480gb SSD instead which is going to help a lot more than slightly better minimum frame rates

I've got a 120GB SSD already so the 1TB HDD is for mass storage

Well just throw the saved money towards a better display like a 4K IPS free-sync display, they run about $500 or so, that's still more important than 10% more CPU performance lol

Ive been using my samsung 226BW for a few years and I just love it....but will the R9 390 handle the 4K?

It'll run like dota 2/rocket league and stuff like that at 4k, any other games would be 1080p which scales perfectly with 4k displays, and then in the future, GPUs capible of running every game at 4k is going to be less and less expensive, which is why you'd want to invest in a 4k display before a higher end GPU

and like I said, it's not worth it to get into overclocking. the H110 board above has all the IO you could want plus USB 3.1 + Type C

Looking at this benchmark here:http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-6700-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4790K/3515vs2384

the 4790K is looking slightly better

You lose USB 3.1 going with haswell, and while it may be faster overall due to clock speeds, the speed increase still isn't going to be worth all the extra money spent to get it.

as far as gaming goes just about any intel quad core running at 3ghz or higher will be fine for gaming.

ny recommendations on a Z170 based mobo?

The MSI Z170-A Pro you picked is a good choice, if you really want to overclock though, you might want to get a higher tier mobo.

I'd say the difference isn't that great. To me, the lower heat output, lower power usage and a more power efecient pc in general (due to DDR4) of the 6700k would be preferable.
