Computer died - need help troubleshooting

Gary7

UPDATE: Installed a brand new PSU and still have the same issue. Think it might be the mobo at this point. Anyone any ideas?

OP

computer will no longer fully power on. It will run the cpu fan at 100% then seem to go fluctuate to a lower rpm indefinitely until I forcibly power it off

(Also started shutting down when it was moved or given a small knock)

It will also restart itself until I manually turn off the power supply. Sometimes powers on 10 times for 1 second each.

I really don't even know where to start here in terms of looking for the problem. PLEASE HELP

ORIGINAL POST

So recently I noticed that my PC will drop signal and shut down randomly and the CPU fan will ramp up. The sequence of events as follows

  1. Gaming at normal gaming loads and temps (CPU 65c / GPU 70c)
  2. Computer shuts down
  3. LEDs on case stay on as well as CPU fan which gets a bit faster
  4. Stays like this for about a minute then shuts down fully and reboots

I'm pretty worried about this and not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Rig - None of my gear is overclocked

i5 4670k

MSI GTX 980

8GB HyperX Grey 1600 DDR3

MSI G43M Mobo

EVGA 500B PSU

I have no idea. The GPU and cpu seem to be fine. The psu is trash but I don't want to buy a new one if it won't solve the issue

Sure sounds like a PSU issue, if at all possible definitely follow Moonzy's advice.

Quick question though, did you change any hardware before the problems started?

The only hardware I changed was adding a 7v molex to 3x3 pin for case fans

Did that as well as GPU.

Powered on at one point but then died when I tapped extremely lightly on the case

weird situation, but i really suspect the PSU is a gone case

perhaps try testing it with another psu (possibly 500~600W and above, and a reliable one)

I think I'm going to have to buy a new one I don't have anything like that around

I'll grab an EVGA 650 watt gold rated

but i suggest you take your computer into a shop and have them checked, would be a bummer if its not the PSU and you ended up with a spare

though u can use it in a future build but meh...

There isn't one competent pc shop in the whole of Ireland:(

Also I can return it to Amazon within 14 days

welp, i guess your only option is to get a psu then

unless you have a friend nearby that is fine with borrowing you their computer for testing xD

Well it wasnt the power supply.... I'm guessing the mobo at this point as there seems to be no power going to the mouse and keyboard  (both have leds)
