Im currently living with my parents (im 16) and will be going to college in a few years and the only ethernet port in my house is almost 100 feet away and my parents understandably dont want to have to run the wire through the walls and i dont blame them but i cont trust just any old rinky dink wifi card for gaming its just to slow what is a good alternative that is kinda cheap? i saw powerlink solutions and i was wondering if they are fast enough and reliable enough for gaming. or would a modem do the trick? I dont know alot about networking so i dont even know if a modem is what im thinking of?

Um no, modem is not what you are thinking of.

Powerline is good for gaming, stable enough, and speeds are good, they are not very expensive so i would go with that.

Pci-e wireless card is the other option you can go with, speeds can be higher than powerline, but it is prone to interference.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

I can understand the confusion there are many types of modems: adsl, cable, 3G etc... It modulates signals in cable lines or phone lines or wireless to transfer digital data over an analog signal, mostly used to deliver internet over existing lines to avoid extra costs running a fiber line for example. Its a very old way of getting internet to people, but has become more stable over the years. Though because of limited speeds everyone is turning to fiber now.

Powerline is pretty much a point to point modem because it modulates the data signal inside the power lines of your house and it offers good speeds, but then you might ask why dont we use it instead of cable or adsl ? Well once the powerline signal hits a transformer the data signal is lost.

Well thats my version, though i never owned a modem in my life so im not the expert here :D
