i have a question about memory. DDR4 memory to be exact. if the motherboard says it supports 2133mhz memory, is there any point in buying faster memory?

It means that it is not officially supported, but you can go above it. What they have listed on their site, they can guarantee that you will be able to achieve those speeds, anything over that, they are not garaunteeing.

i am not dead set yet on a mo bo, but on say a b150 mo bo, can you overclock memory? or do you need a z or x series to do that? and if you can overclock, is that a setting of the mo bo itself, then you need faster memory? i dont know how any of this works.

You can overclock memory on a B150 board, even if you couldn't, at the very least you are able to enable XMP. (E.g. Buy a 3000mhz kit and use it at 3000mhz.)

ok, thanks! now i am curious as to how much faster that would be to my eyes. will i notice it? i am moving up from a very old core 2 duo @ 1.86ghz.

You'll be gaining about 2fps in most games, 5 in a few, not really much to worry about. In non gaming scenarios you will not notice a thing, maybe a small percent off on render times. (2%)
