WiFi Extender Using Ethernet Cable Connection

Hi everyone!

I need help improving my WiFi at home. I don't have a big budget for this project, so I could really use some helpful tips.

I have a 2.4 GHz fiber optic router at my home and I want to extend its range of it by using another router/repeater; however, I want the repeater to be connected to the main router through a cable and not wireless, but also have a WiFi so it can share the connection with cellphones for example.

Is that possible? If so, what do you call that kind of repeaters? and what should I be looking for when buying one?

Also, can I use an old router to do that kind of job by modifying its firmware?

Sorry if I wasn't clear on any part as English isn't my first language :)

Thanks in advance!
