thats why when choosing your host, you pick a datacenter that has DDoS protection of at least some variety.

as for, if you *insist* on home hosting (please dont), find a datacenter that has low end servers with a decent uplink and DDoS protection on the cheap, and VPN your servers trough that.

and for those that say you wont get DDoSed: it'll happen, theres at least one dude that'll throw some cash on tanking your server just for the heck of it.

cloudflare is an option as well, but i am not familiar with it so i wont recommend it.

DDoS protection can be costly / ineffective when you're trying to host it at home. Try to host your server on a third party remote location. DDoS are pretty hard to protect against as it is a matter of blocking certain protocols bombarding your external IP, the only issue is when blocking them you have no idea if they are legitimate requests or someone trying to DDoS so some hosting companies have decent protection they can provide

What country are you looking to host your servers in? I mostly know of US data centers but there are quite a few others out there. Knowing the location can help me recommend something better for you (and keep in mind that location + DDOS protection = latency which gamer servers dislike so make sure you put a good location compared to your target audience to offset the DDOS protection latency).

Cloudflare will not work for game servers (they are a DNS solution which won't help you since the latency will hurt you).

Hosting at home will not work for you unless you have at least $500k to throw at it (and that's for laying fiber for really cheap upstreams like Cogent and HE and with really low end DDOS mitigation appliances, your monthly costs would only be about $20k though for the internet).

I am hosting the servers from home, in Sydney, Australia.
