Hello LTT Forum! I have a question regarding HTPC hardware and 3D TVs.

I'm currently in the process of building my HTPC, but a question had just come to mind. I have a 65" Samsung 3D TV and plan on watching 3D movies with it. Do I need any specific hardware (outside of a 3D Blu-Ray drive), or will anything standard work, as the TV already has a 3D encoder? For example, would I need a 3D Vision Nvidia GPU, or would the Radeon HD 7850 I'm already throwing in it be enough? Any help or even advice is much appreciated, as this is my first go at an HTPC.

Thanks a bunch, this forum is awesome for help.

Go with the Geforce 3DTV Play. It's different from the 3DVision they have too. You don't need those expensive active glasses for 3DTV Play. You can go with the Nvidia glasses too but not all TVs support them. The frequency needs to be 120Hz min, which flat TVs rarely are. 3DTV Play works with the glasses that come with the TV, passive too.

Radeon does have support for 3D too but they don't do it in-house so the support for them is pretty laughable. They do it via third parties like iZ3D (turns out, it's discontinued now) and Tridef, but the thing is, not all games and movies support those. Also, HD5000-series doesn't cut it for Bluray. You'd be GPU-shopping anyway.

In any case, all these have free trials available.

Edit: Where the hell did I get that you got an HD5000... :D
