Network help!

Hey guys, I'm trying to play counter strike, but because of unplayable pings, i haven't been able to have very good games. Can someone help me?

My dilemma: I recently just upgraded my router and my modem, but my ping in cs go is still in the high 500s for the VAST majority of the time i'm playing, then drops down to about 30. 30 is awesome for me, but i cant really play with 500 ping. I am on Ethernet by the way. What is interesting is that if i just put my Ethernet cord from my computer to the modem, my ping is 25 consistently. I would just do this all the time, but other people in my house have to use the internet, so this isn't an option for me. Can someone tell me what is going on here? Any help would be great thanks.
