x99 M.2 SSD

my friend has a brand new asus x99 motherboard and a samsung m.2 ssd.  nothing is reading the ssd.  any ideas?

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

Like @blueballs said, we need the full specs. ASUS has a lot of X99 motherboards, Samsung has a lot of M.2 SSDs, and they all work together differently.

I'm going to guess you have an 850 EVO or other SATA-based M.2 drive. None of Asus's X99 boards support SATA M.2 SSDs. They will only support PCI-Express M.2 drives such as the 950 PRO. All is not lost, however, as you can buy an enclosure/adapter that will convert that M.2 into a 2.5" SSD that you can mount in the system.
