Nvidia driver help needed

 So, since I like playing Warcraft 3 (a game from 2003) I tried to with a friend but the 860M doesn't activate. No matter what I set in the NCP it still uses the Intel HD 4600 iGPU and thus results in poor performance when more units are on display. Any ideas?

can you disable the onboard in the bios? Not sure this is a driver issue, more a device handling through the os

is there a BIOS option to allow switching?

my dell had a BIOS switch between the nVidia or the onboard.

It's a laptop so I assume Nvidia Optimus takes care of that, doesn't it?

have you checked the bios?

also thinking it could be down to power management, check both windows and NVidia driver options for "max performance"

First thing I did. iGPU is limited to 5W so that's also part of the problem

so the option in Nvidia panel is set to "high performance" not "auto" ?

Yes. It's also told to use the 860M in that application yet it ignores it

is that NVidia card detected in device manage? Also does it show if you run dxdiag?

Yes. The card works perfectly fine in any game except the DX8-based WC3.

can you try rolling back your driver to 355.98 ?

hmm that's odd, even then, I would have thought the onboard would be fine running WC3

I'm not crashing and there was a driver specifically for the 860M to fix the issues. Using that atm.

I've had the exact same issue on my newly purchased Laptop (Intel GPU and 960M) 

 

All games works fine but the Steam VR test will not for the life of me detect the NVIDIA GPU. 

 

I've tried everything and couldn't get it to work. I've been told it's because the game doesn't support the technology used nowadays but ain't sure

Nah. My R9 280 runs WC3 easily. It's not that. It's a buggy driver.

5W TDP limit might be part of the issue

So much for having better drivers ._.

If the game were 2D I'd understand but it's 3D ._.

Well to be fair, my drivers have given me 0 issues in like 15 months since I switched over to Nvidia, only problem I had AMD/ATI side (not the drivers really) was a memory leak in Raptr. I do remember some minor issues with an old laptop I had running ATI 9000 Pro

Opposite for me. Spent 4 years with AMD with only 1 bad driver that was causing some bugs with Firefox

My laptop OS somehow got corrupted after GFE updated my driver.
