I am working on trying to make two systems share drives over a network. On one computer everything seems fine, it is finding itself on the network. The other computer can't even find itself. Network sharing and searching is turned on, and they are able to ping each other. I have run out of ideas, from what I can tell both computers should be identical with the exception of different IPs.

how did you "network" them

lets say you used a cable to connect them directly you need a "crossover" cable and you might have ha "patch" cable

patch cables are used if you have something like a switch between your components

and crossover cables have some pins switched so you dont need a switch between them

In console do ipconfig find the ipv4 adress. Then on the slave pc enter \\xx.xx.xx.xx ( the ipv4 ) .

Then enter the user password you use on master pc. If its domain or mail use it as login.

Ok, so that worked, but it still doesn't show up under "network"

Also, it says I don't have permission to view the shared folder. Password protected sharing is off, and public sharing is on in the Network and Sharing Center

There is a switch inbetween

Make sure your firewall is off on both machines. That fixed the issue for me.

The shared folder you try to connect to is it part of a domain? The other pc is it running windows server? If so you need to contact whoever is in charge of that server.

If its you're server you need to do some changes in active directory and add a login script to map the driver on the network.

Both are running Windows 7. I am just trying to share a drive from one computer to the other.

This shouldent be nessesary. But try this anyway. Go to my computer. Then properties on the drive you want to share. Enable sharing for all.
