Yes, M.2 is definitely faster, go for it.

I have a M.2 and Sata both, no regrets.

I have a m.2 slot on my motherboard and i was wondering if it was worth getting an m.2 drive for my boot drive

Only if you don't already have an SSD.

You have a Z97 platform, which means that unless your motherboard is the Asrock Z97 Extreme6 your M.2 slot only uses PCIe 2.0 x2, which is a quarter of the bandwidth a proper NVMe SSD is meant to use. Personally, I got a 950 Pro in spite of this (I have the same platform) because I plan to upgrade to X99 later, but that's just my case.

If you already have an SSD, an NVMe SSD will only run about ~200Mb/s faster, which you will not notice at all.

Now, you could get an NVMe SSD to go in an expansion slot (like your GPU). That would let it to use the full bandwidth it's designed for, allowing it to run several times faster than a SATA SSD. I personally cannot tell you whether that is a noticeable difference, however, as I have yet to give mine full bandwidth.

You should ask this as a new topic in either Troubleshooting or Storage Devices, not inside of some else's unrelated thread.

Find the spec of your mobo. Check whether the M.2 is wired to Sata Express(10Gb/s) or PCIe 3.0x4(32Gb/s). Does it support NVMe? You don't want to buy the wrong M.2 drive.

^^^ thiss .. worth noting that the 950 pro ssd (nvme) has read speeds of 2.5gb/s. that's crazy fast for the price just make sure your motherboard supports it

I'm going to guess you have an 850 EVO or other SATA-based M.2 drive. None of Asus's X99 boards support SATA M.2 SSDs. They will only support PCI-Express M.2 drives such as the 950 PRO. All is not lost, however, as you can buy an enclosure/adapter that will convert that M.2 into a 2.5" SSD that you can mount in the system.

Agree with @Dash Lambda, though, your question should've been asked in your own thread.
