Governments pushing ahead with things in face of strong criticism seems to be the norm these days.  Sadly, this is hardly "news"

It seems like governments are using 1984 as a guidebook now. Most UK citizens believe they have no need for privacy because they have nothing to hide, as Edward Snowden said, saying you are not worried about privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you are not worried about free speech because you have nothing to say. While there looks like there is a lot of criticism, I haven't heard it mentioned on the news once in the UK since it was first introduced and it was portrayed as a good thing.
