GPG or encryption software?

I read in a couple of threads about encryption, data safety and which software should be used to protect data.

My question is if it's better to use gpg keys or any other kind of encryption software, and I don't mean just passwords, but anything on a drive.

I use GPG on both my windows and Kali Linux machines, to easily encrypt in .gpg text, images, docs or stuff I need to keep safe or share with someone.

 

What do you think? GPG or other software?
