Hello,

so I am in a electronics school and The GPU from my Qosmio X770 just broke and I wanna get a new one.

What do I need it for?

  • MS Office
  • Visual Studio
  • Some shematic programms
  • AoE 2 (if it's very boring in school

I think you get the Idea I have a new Tower at home which I use the rest of the time

Price: I was aiming at 500-800€

My Idea:

  • MS Surface 3 the 128GB Version + keycover (~800€)

Any suggestions why to take it or not or other ideas (doesn't have to be touch but with windows)?

So I take it you want slim and portable? Or do you want the best built machine available for the cash? Or do you need serious horsepower?

well a healthy combination but a big screen would be nice (1920x1080) >=15"

it doesn't need a lot of power because i just use it for school the programs we use there aren't to hard to run

This is my Old Laptop which did the job without any problems

Well - if you want big, powerful and well built then this might interest you? I'd normally not recommend it here but the price currently is absurdly low.

True but for that price you'd be hard pressed to find a 256GB Samsung SSD already pre-installed and also a potent GPU for mobile gaming.

Oh, the sellers (silly me) - my German is non-existent but if it's coming from Amazon it should be good. Just make sure it's new and not used and pay attention to the warranty listed. If it's under 1 year there's something fishy.

ok so I asked in the chat and they said I would have 2 Years of hardware warranty

only points why I am not sure if I should buy it:

  • 4k Display what for? sounds kinda overkill ^^
  • ~4 hours battery life won't even take me through half a day (at least better than my current one)

Btw I have a 250gb SSD from samsung and a normal 1tb hdd at my disposal from the old laptop so I wouldn't really need those

I would suggest looking around for an AMD APU-based laptop, because for what you need it to do, basic office and number-crunching programs, and a little light gaming here and there, an APU laptop paired with an SSD will run like greased lightning. I had that sort of setup for a long time and it was really very good. I picked it up used for about $300. Had an A10-4600M and it was fantastic for source-based games, Minecraft, etc.

4K display is optional - you can just get the regular 1080p but if you want the beautiful 4K screen, you could get it. The drawback is that it runs at 48Hz.

Eh, battery life isn't good with mainstream notebooks. If you want battery life, you're going for one of the following:

13-14' ThinkPad which get around 6-13 hours depending on the model
The crazy expensive Macbooks which score good battery results
Some HP Elitebook which doesn't come with that good of a display but also lasts longer

Basically, if you want an enormous battery, you are looking at weaker performance and a fairly ugly business-class notebook.

As for what I found, here.

It should get around the same overall performance unless you need a lot of single threaded performance (you don't). For the price it's worth it imo. I've used laptops like this before and they're very good options for consumer-grade laptops. Very well-rounded,
