Major HDD deterioration! Help

chrisbeva16

I purchased a new HDD about 2 weeks ago ( seagate barracuda 2tb) I have put about 60 hours on it according to ashampoo HDD controller and the health and performance has dropped from 95% health, 92% performance to 88% heath and 80% performance overnight. The average temp of the drive is 29 degrees Celsius and I always shut down my computer properly. My main question is what do I do? I don't think that a shop will refund it as it is still in working condition and I don't really want to wait for it to die on me.  :(

Thanks in advance,

BTW: The 1tb drive that is at 98% and 100% currently has 2400hrs on it, the reason why I am worried for such quick deterioration on the new drive

I would try running HDTune and perform an error scan to see if you get any bad blocks. (be sure to uncheck the quick scan option). Those percentages don't really mean anything imo. What errors does it report?

I downloaded the new version of Ashampoo HDD controller and my drive has now gone down to 69% health and 48% performance, it says that :

But what can it mean by faulty connecting cable, i doubt that that would be the issue as the health of the drive has also dropped...

I don't believe a hard drive could deteriorate that quickly... If you see no major change in the read/write speeds than try another HDD monitoring program. Otherwise just take all your files off that drive and contact Seagate directly saying the drive is dying and they should be able to help you.

You should have no problem returning the hard drive if its in a redundand downslide as such to reander it incapable of obvious shelf life.

RMA the drive to the manufacturer (not the place where you bought it).  It is still under warranty.  They will most likely replace it.  If they give you the option of a cash refund, I would go with Western Digital drives.  I've had nothing but problems with Seagate drives and every WD drive I have ever had works great.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

Hypervisor 1: Intel Xeon E5-2630L, ASRock EPC612D8, 16GB DDR4 ECC RAM, Intel RT3WB080 8-port RAID controller plus expansion card, Norco RPC-4020 case, 20x2TB WD Red HDD

Other spare hypervisors: Dell Poweredge 2950, HP Proliant DL380 G5

Laptops: ThinkPads, lots of ThinkPads

Altough I'm a bit of a WD fan boy, I must say that statements like these go in both ways. They are both quality manufacturers...
