Honestly fiber just isn't worth it unless you are going long distance or do really high port densities. For gigabit it is pointless, cat 6 cable will do the exact same job at a 100th the price, for 10 gig it can be worth it but you would be looking at SFP+ modules and the appropriate PCIE card for your PC, have a look at the Intel X520 on ebay.

Its not worth it, just run Cat6a and call it a day. When the time comes that 10gbps isn't fast enough, your fiber wouldn't be fast enough either.

There are literally hundreds of different kinds of fiber cables/connectors to account for, its not something your average hobbyist just orders and installs. Fiber lines are easily kinked (in all honesty not as easily as the industry would have you believe, but still WAY more fragile than copper), connector ends easily damaged, and even specs of dust on the actual glass tip of the connector will scratch the surface of the connector so bad that you have to replace it. At bare minimum for connecting fiber into equipment you'd need a $60 clicky cleaning pen and a $300+ (most are around $1000) scope. You should also then test it with a ~$5000 OTDR tester, overkill for a home network, but if you are going through the trouble/time/money of installing fiber why stop there.

If you are wanting cheap 10gbe or you need more than 100 meter run, fiber would be your choice. If you are sticking with 1gbe, cat6a copper would be your choice.

Fiber as a choice, run OM4 multimode with FC connectors this will give you up to 100gbe for future expansion.

We really need more info as to what you are trying to accomplish to give you a more informed answer.

The Media Converter is really just for making a Cat cable run more than 100 meters.
