Hello Internets,

So I've recently moved, and at the new location we have a very modern router (IPS supplied) running on Australia's supposedly new and "fast" National Broadband Network (that still lags behind pretty much every other developed country but that's another topic) and I've been having nothing but problems with my Asus PCE-AC56 PCI-E 802.11 AC Wireless Network Adapter.
 - First it wouldn't connect at all
 - Then I was getting the infamous "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" error after a few brief moments of it working flawlessly just after the system is booted
 - Yesterday and the day before it took a turn and I was experiencing all sorts of Windows Explorer issues where the internet interface in the toolbar wasn't working (I click on it and it does nothing to several moments if not several minutes later)
 - Right now I have it connected using my Galaxy S6 as a makeshift USB adapter, but if I disengage it the wireless might work for a few hours before lapsing back into the DNS error.

I'm at a loss of what to do, I've tried all the Command Prompt fixes you can find for the DNS error, it just comes back. At my old house the CMD fixes worked and for months and months I had no problems with the adapter. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Have you tried resetting the router?

If I were you and I could afford it, I'd buy a separate router. Generally the router/modem combos (I assume that's what you have) that ISPs supply are complete garbage. If you want any decent wifi solution I think you should buy your own.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Yeah, I did try that after a few hours of trialling other solutions (CMD and driver updates, etc.) It's a router/modem combo made by Sagecom with some botched up name to suit the Aussie NBN.

Man I'd love to get a new router so much haha, but a) it's not financially possible as a student right now and b) everything else except my desktop works fine with it, and I'd rather make my desktop suit the network than change the network infrastructure to suit one device, if that makes sense.

I get what you mean. How's the wifi signal where your desktop is? Maybe there's something interfering between that and your router, but not with other devices. Also, would it be possible for you to run an ethernet cable from your router to your desktop? Then you wouldn't have to worry about using wifi.

I get three bars on my phone and in the network tool bar on my desktop when I run it through that it's just as fast as the brief hour or so stints I can get the wireless to work properly.

Unfortunately not. The router is on the other side of the house, so running a cable would involve either getting a professional in to put an Ethernet port in the router room and in my room or run the cable through several common areas in the house. I've looked into making a solid Ethernet connection between my desktop and the router so many times but it's just not possible with the layout of the house and where the router has to be because of the NBN.

Sorry but I had a bit of trouble understanding your first sentence. Could you clarify a bit please?

Are you using 5GHz or 2.4GHz? You also might want to consider getting a wifi extender and see if that helps anything.

Just how my phone and computer graphically interpret WiFi signal strength, long story short the router is closer to my desktop in this house than in my old one and the signal seems to be stronger but usability doesn't seem to correlate with the stronger signal.

I don't think it's something that is caused by the router, sure its an ISP router and all the rest, but my laptop works on it fine right next to the desktop, and the desktop experiences ups and downs where one second it's fine and the next everything is falling apart. Right now, if I try to connect it says "connecting" perpetually until I click out of the pop up, and if I try to return it just lists the available WiFi networks like nothing ever happened. I'm really starting to suspect something software related, MalwareBytes hasn't found anything as yet but I'm anxious this might be some sort of virus or malware.

i think the best thing you could do is get a powerline kit of your system they work by running Ethernet sign through your house this would fix any speed or instability that you might be having i use them for my xbox one there perfect.

something like this would help your issue i think.

It might be because your wifi adapter is at the back of your computer since it's a PCIe adapter. The metal of your case could be screwing with the signal, but it sholudn't make it unusable :\

I'd try doing what @asterix1001 suggested - get a powerline kit (if you can afford it) so you can run wired ethernet to your rig.
