I have Cannon handheld video camera that I record "vlogs" with for my YouTube channel, but when I went to import those video files to my macbook running Mac OS X 10.7.5 it reads each video file as 2 seperate (don't know if spelled correctly) files, and when I try to open either one of them it says that the file cannot be opened because of the file type. I need to know how to fix this, I have not tried actually inserting the SD card into my MacBook due to the fact that I have no SD card slot, I access the files via usb to the video camera, but it doesnt make a difference, because I tried the same thing on my friend's MacBook pro running Yosemite with the SD card slot and it had no difference. Please help, I do have access to windows computers to transfer files from the card to an external hard drive, but that is a very large hassel to go through just to edit footage on my MacBook.

Have you tried an online converter to change them to a common file like .jpg?  Or for videos .MP4? or other formats?

The reason why the files are split in multiple parts is because FAT32 (SD cards are typically formatted this way) has a maximum file size limit of 4GB. If you're not able to open the files, you'll want to grab Handbrake so you can convert them to something more usable.

I open the device folder for the sd card, and I drag and drop, but I never get to the drag and drop to my desktop part because I preview the clips first, but I can't because this happens

So the camera records MPEG 2 format files, according to the specs I can find.  Do you have QuickTime installed on your computer?  Make sure you do, and then install a player like VLC for OSX and try opening the video files.

It's not images that I'm trying to import, but it's having the same issue with those as well, taken on both my FS300 and my Cannon PowerShot S5IS, but it seems as if there is both a .MOD and a .MOI file for each file name, because for every name, there is one of each...I was thinking that maybe one is video and one is audio or something, but I have video footage from both cameras on here, I think this is just the video camera files, I will keep digging to see if I can find more from the DSLR camera

Try doing this: change the files with the MOD extension to MPG extension.

Filename.MOD. --> Filename.MPG and try playing it in something like VLC.

And yes, the is a VLC for OSX.

The problem is not an issue with the OS, it is due to the MOD file extension.  You will face similar problems in Windows too, and the solutions are simple:

  • change the MOD extension to MPG, see if that works
  • make sure you have MPEG 2 codec installed
  • conver the MOD file to something else, if necessary

Select the file in OSX, press enter to rename the file and change the file extension.

Maybe you need to enable OSX to show file extensions.
