So I've had my PC for a while and I mainly use it for video editing. Tried to put some 4K footage into my editor today, and although it worked, it is certainly time for an upgrade. My current system is as follows :

Corsair Carbide 500r Case

Corsair 850M PSU

Asus P9X79 Mobo

Intel Core i7 3820

Corsair Hydro H80

Corsair Dominator 16GB 1866mhz (4x4gb)

Asus Geforce GTX 670

I'm planning on replacing the GPU for a Geforce GTX 980 TI, but I wondered if I stuck that straight in the machine, would it bottleneck with all the other components? If yes, any suggestions on what to upgrade, or should I just scrap the whole machine, sell it for parts, and buy a completely new build?

Many thanks!

The i7 isn't really too bad and is expensive to replace and 16gb of RAM is maybe okay but also a relatively cheap upgrade. Check your memory and CPU usage to see where the biggest problem is. The 980ti should be fine, btw. Maybe wait until polaris/pascal if you don't need it right now?

Tip to those that are new on LTT forum- quote a post so that the person you are quoting gets a notification, otherwise they'll have no idea that you did. You can also use a tag such as @Ryoutarou97 (replace my username with anyone's. You should get a dropdown after you type the "@")to send a notification, but quoting is preferable.

Feel free to PM me about absolutely anything be it tech, math, literature, etc. I'll try my best to help. I'm currently looking for a cheap used build for around $25 to set up as a home server if anyone is selling.

If you are a native speaker please use proper English if you can. Punctuation, capitalization, and spelling are as important to making your message readable as proper night theme formatting is.

My build is fully operational, but won't be posted until after I get a GPU in it and the case arted up.

Looking at the available hardware monitors, the issue seems like it's the CPU is struggling on load. Memory stays within limits, as does the GPU (18% on Render / 5% on Playback). Using AMIRA 4K footage, it maxes out the CPU in a few seconds and I start getting stuttering.

If the GPU is barely being used now, should I really need to upgrade the CPU?
