i actually go to school within 5 miles from a micro center.

Then problem solved! Get a 4790k. They have an in-store pickup deal where you can get the cpu for $270. You can bundle it with the Motherboard and save even more. The 4790k is a 4.0ghz stock speed cpu. It has 4 cores and 8 threads. Plenty for any gaming/video editing you might need to do.

Dangit, looks like they raised the price. Well you said that you had $300 to spend and it's $299.99.

If you don't plan to overclock you can buy a regular 4790.

Seen here for $250 http://www.microcenter.com/product/432163/Core_i7-4790_36_GHz_1150_Boxed_Processor

It's exactly the same cpu, just not overclockable.

Yea, I would go with an i7 4790k for the $300 range.

Or, if you don't care about overclocking, go for the Intel Core i7-4790S, which has more graphics capabilities, such as high-end 3D gaming

Even if the i7-4790S has a better integrated GPU you won't be playing anything more than CS:GO or L4D2. Integrated GPU's would have a hard time playing things like GTA V or Battlefield 4.

You could also go with a new Xeon E3 V5 processor.  I got a Xeon E3-1230 V5 for $275 on Newegg and paired it with an Asus E3 Pro Gaming V5 motherboard.  The motherboard will accept Skylake Core i processors as well (such as the i7-6700K).
