I am getting a new graphics card, either a GTX 960, or a GTX 970.

My processor is a Pentium G3258, and I'm not sure if it will bottleneck those cards.

If it will bottleneck, what is the cheapest processor that I can get without it bottlenecking?

Thanks

I think this will depend a lot on the game. In a not-very-CPU-intensive game, the 970 should run just fine alongside the G3258. However, you should look into upgrading to an i5 og a low-power Xeon if you got the budget to do so.

There are probably some good alternatives from AMD, both with GPUs and CPUs. The 390 is seemingly better off than the 970 and 980 when it comes to price/performance.

Edit: or the 380.

For a more balanced upgrade either consider picking up a i3 + a GTX 960 / R9 380, or if you're set on get a GTX 970 / R9 390 get ready to OC the living shit out of the G3258.

Which i5 or low power Xeon would you recommend?

For processors I would go Intel

Skylake or Haswell i5/i7

But if you go Skylake, then you need a new motherboard with DDR4 RAM.

If you pick a Haswell, then you dont need new RAM.I hope that the motherboard will be fine.

My motherboard is a H81M-E34

I think I'm fine with a Haswell, but I'm not sure which processor to get

The Xeon E3-1231V V3 or the Xeon E3-1220 V3.

The 1231 performs on par with the Haswell i7s, but costs around the i5 4690k. 1220 is just a bit slower and costs a bit less.
