Need a new laptop

So basically I've never bought a laptop before, only built desktops, so I don't know what to look for.

 

basically my old toshiba dual core is crapping out on me and I need a new laptop for school and productivity, and I won't be doing any gaming on it. Can anyone suggest anything?
