Why are Internet protocols universal?

So why does everyone use the same internet protocols?

Because otherwise you couldn't have a global, or even large network consisting of many different users. Standards are good, they allow everyone to join in.

What does this define as an "internet protocol"? There are plenty of widely used proprietary protocols, EIGRP used to be proprietary.

Was this to answer a question on a quiz? Seems kind of random. It's like asking why almost everyone uses roman numerals. Because if not, math would get really confusing. If you are looking for specific ports and what they do, see here.
