I am planning to upgrade my current build to have it last for another couple years until I can afford a completely new computer.

My current is:

CPU: AMD AM3 x6 1090T 3.20Ghz Phenom II

MOTHERBOARD: Asus M4A87TD-USB3 870 DDR3

VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 660

RAM: 10GB, assorted brands

POWER SUPPLY: Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus RS-650 Watt

CASE: No name brand from the place I got the computer built originally

I want to be able to play games such as Far Cry 4 etc on high settings if possible. My current plan is to:

- upgrade the video card (leaning towards the MSI GeForce 980Ti, unless I'd be better off sticking to AMD to match the CPU etc.)

- get 16GB of new ram (because my current ram is old bits and pieces I had lying around)

- Get a better cooling solution for my CPU, thinking an AiO water cooling system?

- Get a new case (Leaning towards the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, acrylic Window edition)

- Get a SSD, 512GB-1TB, to reinstall my operating system on, as well as other programs

- Upgrading the power supply to a higher voltage, assuming that I would need to?

I will also buy a new monitor, keyboard, mouse and headset at a later date. Most of this would be irrelevant to the upgrade, but I plan on buying a FreeSync/G-Sync monitor, ideally IPS panel, ultra wide 1440 resolution monitor.

My planned budget is around $1500, but knowing that the GPU is going to be $1100 if I go with the 980Ti, I'm willing to be flexible up to $2000. I live in Australia so this budget is in $AUS.

Ideally I can purchase the majority of the parts from a single vendor, have been looking at www.pccasegear.com but would be open to other suggestions.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to upgrading/building computers so I don't know anything about the compatibility issues with RAM, video cards etc with my current motherboard.

Any help or advice with my plans would be awesome, thanks.

Could you sell your current rig as an entry level gaming rig and just go new?

This. IMO it will be easier to build a new, more balanced, PC.

CPU: Intel i5-4590 | Motherboard: Asus H97M-E | GPU: Sapphire Nitro R9 390 | RAM: 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Fury Black | SSD: Sandisk Plus 240Gb HDD: Seagate 250Gb  | PSU: Seasonic G650 80+ Gold | Case: NZXT S340

I am who I am.

I have heard that CPU and GPU tech will advance drastically within a year so I'm hesitant to buy a completely new rig now. I was hoping to upgrade my current rig enough that it will last me for another year or so, when I could then build a completely new system with the latest tech.

Im not sure if this would be the right forum for this question now but, If I was to sell my current rig, what would be the price range to look at, and any tips on the best place to sell it?
