Having problems with Remote Desktop Connection

Whenever I use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to another computer running Windows 8.1 Pro, it will pop up the username and password prompt, but after keying in the details (whether correct or wrong), RDC stops working, and it gives me the option to close the program or debug it (http://i.imgur.com/wRKnKle.jpg). This does not happen when I try to connect it to another computer which is running Windows 7 Ultimate. Using another laptop to try to connect to the Windows 8.1 machine works.

After checking the event log for details, this is what I get.

Faulting application name: mstsc.exe, version: 10.0.10586.0, time stamp: 0x5632d1d8
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.10586.20, time stamp: 0x56540c3b
Exception code: 0xc0000409
Fault offset: 0x00000000000950f7
Faulting process id: 0x3264
Faulting application start time: 0x01d16331935777d0
Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: 5a4047af-4424-475d-9799-61af578e0525
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

Seems like the fault module is ntdll.dll. I have tried running sfc /scannow and DISM to repair Windows and after much hassle, have successfully repaired any problems it found.

So after going through all of this, it still crashes. So any ideas?

If you haven problems and dstill can't find one have you thought about upgrading to Windows 10?

Both computers that I try and use to connect are running Windows 10. The computer that is running Windows 8.1 is a fresh install, and I don't really want to upgrade it to Windows 10.

I'm not sure what your settings for remote desktop are but if you try this and it works, then the issue is probably authentication related.

On the Host pc (the one you are remoting into)

Right click my computer/this pc and click properties

In the left pane of the window, click on remote settings
Click the radio button to Allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop (less secure)

Now try to remote in and see if it works.

Tried it and unfortunately still crashes...

Have tried something new though. Copying mstsc.exe to desktop and its mui files allowed me to set compatibility settings, and setting it to run in Windows 7 or 8 compatibility mode prevented the crash. However, I can't change compatibility settings when mstsc.exe is in the system32 folder.

Is this on the host or the client device?
