ive been wondering about this for a very long time. my friend and i have been argueing over it. does a 144hz monitor affect your fps? like does it lower or make your frames worse?

It will not affect your framerate. You'll just be experiencing increased visible/noticeable framerates if your game runs above 60 (You can't see above 60FPS on 60Hz. In this case you can see framerates up to 144 FPS).

 

The only case where it may diminish performance if it's at a higher resolution than your old monitor, example your old monitor might've been 1080p but this new one is 1440p. This will reduce your performance.

 

In the end, the refresh rate will not affect performance. However a higher resolution than normal, will.

No. It doesnt  work like that. Basically it's allowing you to see higher framerates in a cleaner smooth way. For example if your playing a game and your monitor is only at 60 hz monitor anything above that you will be able to see just perfectly but if it dips a lot you will see bigger screen tears and stuff like that. 

 

 

FPS is mostly on GPU and CPU. Nothing else really.
