Half Life 2 Update... Help?

So I've installed HL2 - Yes I know, I'm late to the party, but it's better than never showing up... Most of the time - and then I heard the Half Life 2 Update thingy on steam made it all 'better'. So I'm wondering know, am I supposed to launch the Half Life 2, or the Half Life 2 Update on steam to get the perks of it?
