Black screen no signal

My friend  has bought a Sapphire HD 7850 from ebay used and when he connects the monitor to the card it goes blank any ideas? 

Need help quick.

If the card doesn't function in another computer it might be broken.

Also if he had previously installed a nvidia card, make sure to first uninstall the nvidia drivers before installing the new gpu into the system.
