basically, my problem is when I start up my laptop it's already using 2.9gbs of ram, I have zero clue why this happens I have checked all background apps I've tried turning them all off and still 2.9gbs. does anyone have a solution for this? also my computer is very laggy when watching videos yet plays call of duty and such games at 60fps locked fine, it's so confusing!!!! I have an Asus G501 16gb of ram version is normally very good at troubleshooting but I'm stumped on this one.....

whilst writing this its using 3.7 gbs of ram with just chrome open (2 tabs)

That sounds about right. My windows 10 fresh install used something like 2.7 GB of ram at idle. Now with some applications starting on boot etc, I'm at about 3 GB. This is simply how much RAM is required of the operating system, nothing you can do about it. The good news is, it doesn't matter! Unless you are doing specific content creation tasks, running VRMs all the time or similar, 16 GB is plenty of ram. I too have 16 GB, and have not managed yet to max it out or even get close with work tasks, web browsing and gaming. Feel free to only worry about the amount if ram when you are close to the limit.

The video lag is another issue then, and almost definitely not due to lack of ram. How is your internet connection? Does this only happen when watching youtube videos, or when playing a video locally as well?

Well as far as the netflix app goes, when it first came out it was total garbage and I never used it again, so I assume it's still bad and that's the problem there. Can you try youtube on another browser and see how it plays?

Hmm, unfortunate. The fact that some streaming playback works and some doesn't makes me think this is probably a software issue. Can you try some other video streaming sites as well as see how it is? Maybe Hulu, or amazon prime if you have it? Maybe also try see how twitch live-streaming playback is?

Don't really have any ideas yet, I'm just looking for more data to try and eliminate variables.

Any chance you have another computer on your network that you could try video playback on? I want to eliminate network problems once and for all.

If another computer plays back just fine at least we know it's just your system. I'll be honest with you, at that point what I would do is a total driver wipe and reinstall for both network and display drivers. If that did nothing, I would do a fresh windows install.

My computer uses more than that, around 3.5 GB. Windows really likes using ram. If you're super concerned disable Cortana and some other programs they eat up a bunch of ram. I personally don't worry at all as I got 16GB though.

OK, then other than reinstalling drivers/windows i don't have many ideas. The only things I can think of:

The fact that some video players work and other don't could imply that this is a problem you have with a particular video player type(HTML5) or a specific codec.

There is a video on the bottom half of this page. Can you play it without lagging? Have you found any video files that will lag, or does this only ever happen in a browser?

The other thing: when a video is lagging, can you monitor your cpu usage and temps?  Are they unusually high?
