I just got a new fanless psu and it has a high pitched coil whine while outside the case, haven't tested the noise level with the case. The noise varies between on and off, but is always on. Is this normal? Is it fixable? Is there even a way to slightly reduce it?

You can try to RMA the psu, but I've never had a coil whine device before.

i had an EVGA 750W supernova which had very bad coil whine when under GPU load but was silent on idle...i called EVGA and they refund me through newegg...EVGA is a special kind of animal though, not many companies will accept to do something like that...coil whine in a device is generally not considered as it being faulty.

It might go away over time...does it get better or worse when it's under heavy load? (gaming for example)

Actually quite the opposite... The more power it uses the quieter it is.

It's loudest when the computer is off.

then, i would believe it might go away after some time...run it heavy for a while and see what happen...make it get real hot! :D

Nothing you can do as it's a PSU.

Best is to ask the seller or manufacturer (if they offer direct support) for a RMA replacement unit. Then hope for the best your replacement will be better.

What PSU did you get anyways?

I see...well, if it makes you feel any better, my RM750X makes coil whine when OFF. Very very quiet but it's there. Goes away once I turn on the system lol.

Btw, if you ever think about returning it instead of replacing it, you can get the RM1000X for a bit more. It operates fanless until 500W.
