Ram sticks

So I am currently using a prebuilt Hp Pavilion while I save up money and buy parts for my build. The HP has one stick off 8gb DDR3 but I just got the ram thats going into the new build a few days ago so I am wondering if I could replace the 8gb stick, keep it around until I'm done buy parts and then just switch them again. The mother board only has 2 ram slots so I'm not sure if I would get duel channel. Also would there be any performance increase if I do switch the ram.

If your motherboard supports DDR3, then yes you can.
