If I put multiple samsung 950 Pro m.2 ssds' in a raid-0 array, how many PCI lanes would  the array use? would it be 4 times the number of m.2? Also how would I go about backing up the raid onto another drive? without using the same types of drive as a back up.

Here is where I would keep my frolics if I had any.

Depends on what mobo you have. I think DMI on Z170 allows for up to 3x 4 lane pcie M.2 drives (Raid 0 on 2 would use 2x4 for 8 pcie lanes), but I think you would saturate the DMI Bus with one M.2 drive. The only real reason I could see on a desktop is to get more storage than the 512gb Samsung comes in. I would recommend getting one M.2 for the Os, and a 1tb Samsung 850 Evo, config is the same price or cheaper than 2 950 pros, and much more storage with similar performance.

I am going to be building a Broadwell-E system as soon as it comes out (in a month or two[i hope]). So an X99, I have read that at CES, manufactures had new x99 mobo's with 3 M.2 slots.

Ehh I would wait till then to decide. I don't really know that much about this, and there could be more M.2 Drives out then.
