Ok, so these seem to be a popular headphone to mod, with people like MrSpeakers selling these modded headphones for much more than the original 130$ headphone cost.

Is there anything I could do to make a pair of headphones comparable to the Mad Dogs for less money? I have some general non audio related modding experience.

I would also probably want to but the 60$ alpha pads.

So would it even be relitivly easily possible to compete with the Mad Dog?

Yes you can make those headphones comparable to Mad Dogs for less money, you just have to figure out how to make them sound like the Mad Dogs. But how do you do that?

Well, Google is your first stop.

Instead, I would just Google for TRP50 mods and find one that is doable by you that would give you the sound that you want.

Pretty much this. The DBV 3 mod is probably the best option for getting a great sounding headphone for not too much work.

Now how much would that mod cost? I found a pair modded with that mod for 175 or best offer, with aftermarket cable and pads

WOuld depend on how cheap you can get the materials, and how cheap you can find the headphones. that isn't that bad of a deal really.

Yeah, looks like I can build my own for about 150$ total, with no aftermarket pads.

BUt I will probably do that anyway, more fun to do it myself, and I can probably use my Brainwaves HM5/XPT100 pads.

I might end up doing this soon.

Doing it yourself is always more fun. I do love my pair. I will suggest that you have some sort of decent amp for these, as they do take a lot of power.

I just bought a pair from a guy on headfi for 75$, with no cable.

Seems like i have most of the materials needed, including HM5 pads. Just need about 20-30$ worth of stuff, so ill have spent no more than 120$ by the end.

I think that seems pretty good.
