Android chrome frequently freezes temporarily

I'm experiencing frequent freezes on both my android devices with different versions when using chrome.

It will freeze for 5-20 seconds then a dialog box will pop up asking me if I want to report, close chrome or wait. At this point I can press wait or report just fine and continue browsing.

I find that it happens more often on heavier sites but it also seems to be a more recent problem.

I don't recall having this problem previously but since it occurs in both phone and tablet, it doesn't seem to be device specific. Phone currently runs android 6.0.1 (cm13 based rom) and is rooted. Tablet runs 5.1.1 and is running stock software.

Obvious solution is using different browsers but I seem to prefer the chrome ui and ux. So any known solution would be great or a confirmation that it's a known issue would also suffice. I'm close to abandoning chrome as my default browser because it's starting to become outrageous.
