Hey ppl,

I have a question about WOL i've been trying to set up wol over internet on my phone to PC however i can not get it working.

I have no problem setting it up to work when my phone is on the same network as the pc but can not get it to work over WAN.

So far ive set up my router to forward packets from port 9 and 7 to my PC and tryed doing the same in my (modem/crappy router) of witch the router part has been turned of.

Ive set it up so the modem should forward to the router and the router to the pc where am i going wrong here ?

Im using Wake on Lan for android set the external ip in and the mac of my pc but still nothing.

Ive heard modems from IPS's dont allow this by default but you should still be able to force this through forwarding or am i wrong here?

Anny tips ;)

Wake on LAN uses Broadcasts to tell the device to turn on, Routers will not pass broadcasts (except in some very special cases). If you run something like DD-WRT on your router then that supports WoL, so you could tell DD-WRT to send out the WoL Packets for you.

I have an N66U and it has a WOL "feature" that allows the packet to be sent through WAN.  It is under the aicloud "Smart Access"..  I think you need to have the aicloud app on your smartphone for it to work, can't remember exactly.  I only tried it once and decided against using it.

If I need to wake up a machine while I'm out and about, I use VPN to create a tunnel to my LAN.  From there I can send a WOL packet through that VPN tunnel instead of using their silly aicloud app.  And I prefer that VPN method instead of leaving my home router open to anyone wanting to send wol packets.

Home routers don't send broadcast between different networks, but they do in the same network. When you are on your home network, then your router is acting like a switch, which do forward broadcasts. When you are on your phone or whatever, and tries to access your router, the router acts like a router and won't forward broadcasts between the networks. Your home router is not actually a real router, it's more like a combination of a router and a switch.

Anyway, there are two good solutions suggested in this thread.

1) Login on your router and under the "Network Tools" menu (on the left side of the screen) you will find a "Wake on LAN" tab which lets you send WOL packets from the router to a computer on the network.

2) Use the AiCloud app.

my router doesnt have this function i gues ill just drop the idea of waking my pc on wan.

Was more of a project to see if i could witch i gues would have worked if routers were'nt so closed off

Was meant to turn on my pc when i left work so it would be ready to go when i got home xD
