Bugs with second hand devices

So a friend of mine has a refurbished phone, he has to restart his phone because it doesn't make calls anymore, sometimes he loses contacts and with my nexus 4 (also second hand) when I watch YouTube i t just stops playing and I have to restart it too. (My friends phone is a Samsung galaxy s4 active) would throwing cyanogen mod on it help? Or what should I do?

you could try as it seems to be a software issue, but it also could be RAM usage but that would be very strange to happen on those phones.
