Planning to build

Go to solution Solved by HKZeroFive,

he i3 would just be a scapegoat for future upgrade to 6th gen i5/i7. But I like the fact that i'm still within budget and the gpu was upgraded to a 390.

Anyway, would the processor be easily upgraded in the future given the motherboard? And why wouldnt I need to build around a DDR4 ram?

Thanks! :D

DDR3 is still going to be relevant for a long time. Little to virtually no difference between DDR3 and DDR4 in gaming.

But fair enough. If you want to get the i3, I'd grab a 212 EVO for overclocking so the CPU won't bottleneck the 390 too much until you upgrade. MSI motherboards should have a BIOS that allows for locked CPUs to be overclocked so definitely get one.

So your build should look like this:

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($129.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI Z170-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($102.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card  ($274.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 620W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($64.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $692.71
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I'd highly recommend upgrading the CPU as soon as possible, the i3 will bottleneck and restrict your 390 by a bit.

Basically I want to build a 1080p gaming rig that is easily upgradeable in the future (ddr4 compatible ram and a mobo with a 1151 socket for 6th gen cores.)

I need help in choosing a psu and a case for my rig. And any suggestions? Anything I can replace? I need to keep the budget under $700.

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($129.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($164.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 380X 4GB NITRO Video Card  ($233.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $573.85

Note: I already have an existing old (7yr old) 500gb HDD. I'll put it on the finished product if possible. Thanks!

I don't think you need a z170 for an I3.

The dual core i3 is going to limit you in some games. I'd invest in a Haswell four core, it's still a great option today and there's no reason to 'futureproof' your build with DDR4. It's cheaper and will do a lot better. Upgraded to an XFX 390 and added a SSD:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($174.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($71.88 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($44.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB Double Dissipation Video Card  ($274.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($55.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $707.72

I wanted to use the z170 for its 1151 socket for 6th gen cores and its oc capabilities, the i3-6100 was just a scapegoat.
